Yoga is an ancient wholistic system of wellness that originated in India. Yoga includes physical, mental and spiritual practices aimed at balancing ones’ energy, promoting inner peace, and achieving spiritual enlightenment. The word Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning “to yoke”; through our practices we are able to “yoke” the mind and the body’s experience, and connect the physical and spiritual realms. Yoga offers many physical and spiritual benefits including stress relief, better sleep, better affect regulation, improved flexibility (both body and mind!), balance and strength.
Any of our beginner friendly or level 1 classes are suitable for beginners. Don’t worry about your fitness or flexibility level, focus on your own body and listen to it! A consistent yoga practice will develop a stronger mind-body connection and you will begin to be more aware of what your body needs moment to moment. Be patient with yourself and start small. Communicate any physical limitations to the class teacher; modifications are always available and welcome. You don’t need to be an inherently flexible person to try yoga; one of the benefits of consistent practice is increased range of motion and flexibility. Yoga practice can also significantly improve chronic pain – as long as you are listening to your body! If you have any significant physical limitation please make sure your medical provider supports yoga practice, and don’t hesitate to reach out to us before participating for guidance.
From time to time we offer pre and postnatal yoga either as a special series or a one time workshop. Many of our teachers are trained in these styles. It is always recommended to clear any physical practice with your OB doctor while pregnant or postpartum. We recommend familiarizing yourself with postures to avoid in pregnancy prior to participating. Listening to your body is the most important thing. If you had a regular yoga practice before becoming pregnant and are comfortable modifying on your own then you are welcome to attend regular classes while pregnant. If you are new to yoga we recommend attending prenatal classes specifically, or level 1 classes. Please let the teacher know that you are expecting when you arrive.
