Glass Artist Series: Evelyn Gottschall Baker
Evelyn Gottschall Baker is a professional kiln-formed glass artist specializing in the pâte de verre technique. In 2017, she developed the Non-Traditional Pâte de Verre process—a unique approach to kiln-forming glass at low temperatures without the use of investment molds. This innovative method has significantly expanded creative possibilities in glass art, enabling intricate detail and sculptural complexity. Through her groundbreaking technique and dedication to advancing kiln-formed glass, Gottschall Baker continues to push the boundaries of the medium while inspiring a new generation of glass artists.
Her background as a Test Engineer and Graphic Illustrator for U.S. defense contractors informs her artistic practice with technical precision and problem-solving insight. Since developing her technique, she has continued to refine it, creating realistic, nature-inspired sculptures that demonstrate the potential of pâte de verre to capture lifelike textures and organic forms in glass.
Gottschall Baker teaches her method in workshops at leading institutions including Pilchuck Glass School, Bullseye Glass Company, and Warm Glass UK, sharing her expertise with students across the United States and internationally.
Her work has been featured in numerous national and international juried exhibitions, earning two Honorable Mentions and a Best of Show award. In 2022, she was selected as one of twenty-three artists featured in Pâte de Verre: The Material of Time, a major international survey of the medium. In August 2025, she presented an in-depth overview of her process—including the scientific principles behind it—at the Pilchuck Casting and Pâte de Verre Conference.
